Ihlan Omar

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is reportedly using the recent federal search of her Washington, D.C., home as a fundraising appeal ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Federal agents with the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant at Omar’s residence Monday as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. The investigation reportedly involves questions surrounding immigration paperwork connected to Omar’s family. Federal officials have not publicly disclosed the full details of the investigation.

Within a day of the search, Omar’s campaign reportedly began soliciting donations by portraying the investigation as a partisan attack by President Donald Trump and the Department of Homeland Security.

According to a fundraising email obtained by The Hill’s partner network NewsNation, the appeal urged supporters to “stand with Ilhan Omar,” claiming that Trump and DHS had launched a “baseless, partisan investigation” against the congresswoman.

The message encouraged recipients to contribute financially so Omar could defeat Trump-backed opposition and continue advancing her progressive agenda in Congress.

The fundraising effort comes as Omar and her allies have sharply condemned the federal investigation. Omar’s congressional office described the search as an “outrageous abuse of power” and accused the administration of using federal law enforcement to target a political opponent.

Trump has denied involvement in the search, saying Monday that the matter was up to the Justice Department. The Justice Department has stated that HSI executed a judicially authorized search warrant as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.

The investigation has nevertheless become a political flashpoint with the midterm elections approaching. Critics of the administration have questioned the timing of the search, while federal officials have maintained that the investigation predates the raid.

Border Czar Tom Homan said this week that the investigation had been “ongoing for a while,” while former acting ICE Director Jonathan Fahey argued that obtaining a judicial warrant suggested investigators had established probable cause for the alleged immigration-related offenses. Those claims remain part of an ongoing investigation, and no criminal charges against Omar have been announced in connection with the search.

The controversy has now created a second political consequence: Omar is turning the confrontation with federal authorities into a direct appeal to her political base.

With the midterm elections less than a month away, the episode illustrates how high-profile clashes between elected officials and the federal government can quickly become campaign issues — and fundraising opportunities.

For Omar, the message to supporters is clear: the federal investigation is being presented not simply as a legal matter, but as part of a broader political battle over the future of the progressive movement.

The investigation, meanwhile, remains ongoing, with federal authorities providing few public details about the specific allegations under examination
